Physics World reports that scientists from DonIPE, Swiss Paul Scherrer Institut and ETH Zurich, University of Cambridge and the Institute for Numerical Mathematics RAS report a discovery of new objects — magnetic vortex rings. These stable and localized in three dimensions objects within a ferromagnet with sizes of the order of 300 nanometers are similar to the smoke rings in the air or air rings in the water (often played with by the dolphins). Control of magnetic vortex rings may open new perspectives for creation of new three-dimensional magnetic memories and information processing devices.
